A local musician (and acquaintance) who’s signed to Sub Pop Records commissioned me to paint a 20”x20” portrait of his face in oil paint (since that’s the only medium I use) for the cover of his new record. After a month, I finished the painting and dropped it off at his house, instead of handing it to him in person, because he was at SXSW at the time. I dropped it off at his house without being paid beforehand because I have mutual friends with this guy and he’s pretty well known, so I trusted him. Weeks passed with no word about the album or being paid, so today I shot him a message. Turns out that he’s decided not to use my painting for his cover (despite promising me to do so) and he is also avoiding paying me. It was naïve of me to trust him completely and to work on a commission without drawing up a rudimentary contract but I’m just furious that an artist could take advantage of another artist and disrespect me like that.
Just found out that this blonde haired blue eyed girl who’s lived in California all her life applied to schools as “African American” because her family is from South Africa. If that isn’t one of the most flagrant disregards of privilege and offense to actual people of color I don’t know what is. She needs to go
